H.S.C.
The HSC can be the most stressful period in an individuals life. Having the responsibility of presenting work that may have taken months to complete can only add to these concerns if handled incorrectly.
Because of costing issues, many students make the decision to present their works themselves. This can be a good choice if you are the type of person that will complete such a task precisely. And lets face it. Most of the people undertaking visual and industrial arts are these sorts of people, and have no real need to go to a commercial picture framer. Don't just rush in if you think you can cut the cardboard though. You need to be able to choose appropriate colours and proportions to show your work off at it's best. Many schools have a hand mat cutter for just such occasions as the HSC, and this only leaves the small outlay of a few bucks for some mat to adequately present your work. When doing so it is a good idea to get a friend to help you, and put some extra weight on the ruler while your 'e cutting. And remember the old saying "Measure twice cut once."
If you're entirely too stressed to be thinking of cutting mats, making frames or mounting photos, then visit your local framer and get them to do it. Try asking your teachers for recommendations, as they would probably have had something done in the past. Parents are other good sources of information. They know you well and may be able to help translate any problems you may have, explaining what you want to the framer (they may also pay for it). Make it clear when and how you want your work presented. Remember to inform your framer of the weight, size and safety restrictions on framing. They might have changed since last year and you don't want to be burnt by any miscommunications
For those taking some sort of art, it is very important that their major works, when completed are both protected and projected as well as they can be. Choose high quality materials that may protect your pictures during transport. Thin newsagent cardboard is really not much use, and when you get your pictures back you will notice the difference. If you are having your works matted, use real mat board and affix this securely to a backing of fairly rigid stock. If you are having your work framed, choose a sturdy profile that doesn't negatively impact your master piece.
And remember you size, weight and safety restrictions.
