Overview.
Canvas, boards & fabric, includes to no surprise, canvas boards & fabric. It also includes things such as silks, tapestries, all other types of needle point & basically anything else that is not printed of drawn onto paper.
Each of these mediums have different approaches to be taken when looking to get them framed.
- Canvas & fabric that is going to be stretched onto a timber strainer, has issues of how square the paint or print is, how deep & how strong the strainer should be.
When it comes time to frame these, you need to know whether the frame is deep enough & if it indeed needs a frame.
- Boards such as masonite, MDF or proper artists canvas are one of the simplest things there is to frame. There is not much information to give on these.
- Silks & needle points need to be treated differently to other works because they require special care to stretch them straight & flat before framing. There are several ways to achieve this, each with their own pros & cons.
When framing any of these things, you may, or may not need glass. Often it comes down to individual taste & how clean you want your things to stay. There are cases however, when glass is very advisable & your framer should be able to spot these on a case by case basis when they see the work to be framed.
